One of the biggest concerns for DLC map packs in a multiplayer game is the possible player base fracture that occurs with it. those who don’t have the maps won’t be able to join their friends or their favourite servers that have the maps in their rotation. The battlefield series is no stranger to expansion packs which meant that if you didn’t the DLC, you had a chance to be kicked off your server once a map change happened. Dice is now trying to change that by introducing Premium Friends for Battlefield 1.
The way it works is that if you join a party of a friend that owns a premium pass the party will be ‘premium enabled’. This allows the players in the party that don’t have the DLC packs to join every map. The non-premium players will only get access to premium maps if the party is ‘premium enabled’.
There are of course some downsides of playing the maps like that. Such as that only the premium pass owners will be able to gain XP on the DLC maps. For all the non-premium players, the XP will be saved. They’ll receive the XP once they decide to buy a premium pass themselves. Another thing is that only premium players will be able to spawn with the weapons and vehicles from the expansion pack. The premium players will also be the only one to be able to track progress towards the unique medals and codexes for the expansion pack.
I think it’s a great step forwards for the series, as this minimalizes the fracture of people able experience the new content that was previously only locked for premium players.* They currently have launched a test run of premium friends along with the Battlefest event. So, if you own battlefield 1 and have some non-premium friends; hit them up and go check out the new They Shall Not Pass DLC out together!
*unless you have no friends, then it’s still going to be hassle. Although I’m certain you can find friendly people in this community that are willing to help you out!
